SR71 Over Vietnam

Dec 18, 2023 | AMAH, American, Cold War, Operations, Vietnam War

The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird conducted high-altitude reconnaissance missions over Vietnam during the war, leveraging Mach 3+ speeds and 85,000-foot ceilings for strategic intelligence gathering amid North Vietnamese threats. Its advanced stealth coatings and sensors enabled undetected overflights, contributing vital data despite operational challenges in Southeast Asia.

Following the U-2 spy plane came the development of the A-12 and SR-71 – for the CIA and USAF respectively. These aircraft would first see service over Vietnam, where their stealth tech and high performance capabilities would be pushed to their limits.
