WSO (Weapon Systems Officer) – A trained aircrew member in multi-seat military aircraft responsible for operating offensive and defensive systems, managing sensors and targeting equipment, and assisting with navigation and mission execution, allowing the pilot to focus primarily on flying the aircraft. Also known as a Weapons System Operator or Wizzo (slang), the WSO typically occupies the rear seat in tandem-cockpit fighters such as the F-4 Phantom II, F-14 Tomcat, F-15E Strike Eagle, and F/A-18F Super Hornet. Responsibilities include operating radar systems, managing air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons employment, coordinating electronic warfare systems, monitoring threat warning receivers, communicating with other aircraft and ground controllers, and assisting with navigation and tactical decision-making. In strike aircraft like the F-15E, the WSO takes primary responsibility for ground attack missions, operating targeting pods, laser designators, and precision-guided munitions. WSOs undergo extensive specialized training and in the U.S. military are typically commissioned officers (often navigators or rated as Combat Systems Officers). The role enhances mission effectiveness by distributing workload in complex combat environments, though modern single-seat fighters increasingly incorporate advanced automation and sensor fusion to replicate some WSO functions through avionics systems.
