VF-84 (Jolly Rogers): A United States Navy fighter squadron established on 1 July 1955 at Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, initially as VA-86 before being immediately redesignated VF-84 and nicknamed the “Vagabonds.” In 1959, following the deactivation of VF-61, VF-84 adopted the “Jolly Rogers” name and its iconic skull-and-crossbones insignia, continuing a lineage that originated with VF-17 during World War II. The squadron transitioned through aircraft including the FJ-3 Fury, F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom II, and F-14 Tomcat, participating in combat operations during the Vietnam War, Cold War Mediterranean deployments, and exercises like Green Flag. VF-84 was disestablished on 1 October 1995, with its traditions transferred to VF-103.
