Sukhoi – A prominent Russian aerospace and defense corporation specializing in the design and manufacture of military aircraft, particularly fighter and strike aircraft, founded by aviation engineer Pavel Sukhoi in 1939 as the Sukhoi Design Bureau (OKB-51). The company has produced some of the most capable and widely-exported combat aircraft in Russian/Soviet history, including the Su-7 fighter-bomber, Su-24 tactical bomber, Su-25 “Frogfoot” close air support aircraft, and the highly successful Su-27 “Flanker” air superiority fighter family. The Su-27 lineage has spawned numerous advanced variants including the Su-30 multirole fighter, Su-33 carrier-based fighter, Su-34 fighter-bomber, Su-35 advanced multirole fighter, and the fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter. Sukhoi aircraft are characterized by their aerodynamic performance, long range, heavy weapons loads, and maneuverability, with many designs featuring thrust-vectoring engines and advanced avionics. The company became part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) in 2006 as part of Russian aerospace industry consolidation. Sukhoi aircraft have been exported to dozens of countries and have seen extensive combat service in conflicts worldwide, making Sukhoi one of the world’s leading military aircraft manufacturers and a major competitor to Western defense firms.
