Small Uncrewed Aerial System (SUAS): A category of unmanned aviation defined by the physical size and operational weight of the aircraft, typically encompassing systems with a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of less than 55 pounds. In U.S. military doctrine, SUAS refers specifically to Group 1 and Group 2 platforms. These systems are designed for tactical use at the “maneuver” level—such as by individual squads or platoons—and are characterized by their portability, ease of launch (often hand-launched or rail-launched), and ability to operate at altitudes below 3,500 feet above ground level (AGL).
