Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) – One of China’s oldest and largest state-owned aircraft manufacturers, established in 1951 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, and a primary producer of military combat aircraft for the People’s Liberation Army Air Force and Naval Air Force. Originally producing licensed copies of Soviet designs including the MiG-15, MiG-17, and MiG-21 (designated as the J-5, J-6, and J-7 respectively), SAC has evolved into a developer of indigenous Chinese fighter aircraft. Major products include the J-8 interceptor series, the J-11 family (based on the Russian Su-27 Flanker), the J-15 carrier-based fighter, the J-16 multirole strike fighter, and the J-31/FC-31 fifth-generation stealth fighter demonstrator intended for export and potential naval applications. SAC is part of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), the state-owned aerospace and defense conglomerate. The corporation operates extensive manufacturing, testing, and research facilities and has been central to China’s efforts to develop advanced air combat capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign military aircraft technology, though questions regarding intellectual property and technology transfer from Russian designs have been sources of international controversy.
