PLAAF (People’s Liberation Army Air Force) – The aerial warfare service branch of the People’s Liberation Army and the official air force of the People’s Republic of China. Established in 1949 shortly after the founding of the PRC, the PLAAF has evolved from a Soviet-equipped force relying on obsolete aircraft into one of the world’s largest and most technologically advanced air forces. With approximately 400,000 personnel and over 2,800 aircraft, the PLAAF operates a diverse inventory including indigenous designs such as the J-20 fifth-generation stealth fighter, J-10 and J-16 multirole fighters, H-6 strategic bombers, and various transport, tanker, and support aircraft. The force has increasingly emphasized long-range strike capabilities, airborne early warning and control, aerial refueling, and integrated air defense systems as part of China’s military modernization. The PLAAF is organizationally subordinate to the PLA and works closely with the PLA Naval Air Force (aviation component of the Chinese Navy). It plays a central role in China’s territorial defense, power projection aspirations in the Indo-Pacific region, and potential scenarios involving Taiwan.
