NHIndustries (NHI): A prominent European aerospace consortium established in 1992 to act as the focal point for the design, development, and production of the NH90 multi-role military helicopter. Headquartered in Aix-en-Provence, France, the company is a joint venture currently owned by three major aerospace entities: Airbus Helicopters (62.5%), Leonardo (32%), and GKN Fokker (5.5%). NHIndustries was specifically created to manage the requirements of the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA), representing the interests of participating nations such as France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.

The primary achievement of NHIndustries is the NH90, which holds the distinction of being the first production helicopter to feature an entirely fly-by-wire flight control system. The aircraft is produced in two main variants:

  • Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH): Designed for troop transport, electronic warfare, and medical evacuation.

  • NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH): Optimized for autonomous anti-submarine (ASW) and anti-surface unit warfare (ASuW).

While technically advanced and utilizing a full-composite airframe to reduce radar signature, the NHI program has been marked by significant controversy. Several operator nations, most notably Australia and Norway, retired their fleets prematurely due to concerns regarding maintenance complexity, low availability rates, and high operational costs. Despite these challenges, NHI remains a critical pillar of European defense integration, with over 500 units delivered to more than a dozen nations.
