FRELIMO (Frente de Libertação de Moçambique / Mozambique Liberation Front) – A Marxist-Leninist liberation movement that fought for Mozambican independence from Portuguese colonial rule (1964-1974) and subsequently became the ruling party of independent Mozambique. Under the leadership of Eduardo Mondlane and later Samora Machel, FRELIMO provided critical support to Zimbabwean nationalist forces during the Rhodesian Bush War. After Mozambique gained independence in 1975, FRELIMO allowed ZANLA to establish bases, training camps, and infiltration routes on Mozambican territory, making Mozambique a crucial rear area for guerrilla operations against Rhodesia. This support prompted Rhodesian security forces to conduct extensive cross-border raids and operations into Mozambique throughout the late 1970s. FRELIMO’s assistance to Zimbabwean liberation movements came at significant cost, as Rhodesia supported the anti-FRELIMO insurgency RENAMO (Mozambican National Resistance), contributing to Mozambique’s devastating civil war that continued until 1992.
