Developing the VZ-9 Avrocar

Dec 22, 2025 | Concept Aircraft, AMAH

Developing the VZ-9 Avrocar, a Canadian VTOL flying saucer from the 1950s, began as a supersonic fighter-bomber but scaled back to tactical roles using Coanda effect lift via three turbojets powering a central fan in an 18-foot disk. US-funded prototypes tested 1959-1961 revealed instability and low-altitude limits, leading to project cancellation.

The Avrocar was a secret aircraft development program in the early years of the Cold War. We’ve put together two films created by the Avro company detailing the development of this unusual craft. An interesting step back in time for those interested in the engineering.
